A new ‘bouquet’
There is a saying that deals with fine wine from Othello, II. iii. (315) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616): It goes, “Good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well used.” Nita Leland’s newest book, New Creative Collage Techniques, which is a power-packed fresh updated version of the original Creative Collage Techniques, who she co-authored with Virginia Lee Williams, a devoted friend and artist, as I see it, author Leland has etched an indelible mark on her soul that earmarks a ‘historical’ paying forward honor by dedicating ‘NCCT’ to Virginia as an astounding recognition of her now heavenly pal.
I find the book a direct hit on how to create original Collage artworks, beaming with a large array of examples that will excite the creator with an abundance of inspiration; thusly, forging the work’s story to surface in visual form with the use of paper, color and texture as shown in the work, “Wild One” (p32) by Tomoke Parry. I believe Picasso would jury in Parry’s work as a top ‘masterpiece’ contender that explodes with contrasting color to the point where a viewer can smell the fragrance of the flower. At the opposite end, “Crow Attitudes 3”(p9) by Sharon Stolzenberger delivers its message; my eyes could not waiver from the main subject matter, glued as the artist intended and loss in a sea of wonderment.
Without going into more on who’s who or what, mainly because Leland is an international star in the ‘wine cellars’ of the art world, her books are easily recognized with much similarity of fine old wines. Words by Michael Broadbent, a Master of Wine authority sums up what I immensely believe Leland’s book legacy will note, “A sight of the label is worth 50 years experience,” and I am sure Pam Wissman, Stefanie Laufersweiler, Jamie Markle, Holly Davis, Wendy Dunning and Mark Griffin of F+W Media will ensure her next book will be more delicious then all of them together.

Award-winner talks on Leland book
At the beginning of her book "New Creative Collage Techniques," Nita Leland says, "Collage is like an amusement park with something for everyone…Anyone can do it, regardless of age or skill level." Indeed, after reading this colorful, exciting book, you may find yourself "hooked on collage."
This book contains a wealth of easy-to-understand information and beautiful illustration. Every page is rich with goodies, including step-by step pictures of projects from start to finish, descriptions and photographs of materials and techniques, and plenty of gorgeous collages by over 60 artists.
"New Creative Collage Techniques" starts with a brief, informative overview of the origins of collage, provides an illustrated glossary of terms, and then launches into a series of projects, beginning with quick, simple methods and slowly moving into more complex techniques, expanded materials, and unique ideas.
The book is more than just a collage-how-to. It includes clear instructions on making your own creative pieces to add to collages, including crystalline free forms, acrylic appliqués, monotypes, and more. It also tells how to make customized paper, embossing, texturing, and marbling. The basic tenets of art and composition are described as well, making this a great reference book for almost any artist .
The book's spiral binding allows it to lie flat on your work surface, allowing quick and easy reference while you're working on a project. Lists of materials and concise, understandable numbered steps make it easy to understand each project. Helpful tips are included throughout the book. Most importantly, the reader is always encouraged to relax, be flexible, and enjoy the process of creating art. Leland notes, "The element of surprise is part of the fun -- and challenge -- of collage."
"New Creative Collage Techniques" is not just a collage instruction book -- it's also a handy reference guide for a number of creative art techniques. It's a great addition to any artist's library.

Thanks to Kay for a comprehensive review of the book. It's exciting to see it from another artist's point of view.
An accessible treasure
Nita Leland’s New Creative Collage Techniques book is a great inspiration to me; in fact, I am grateful for my new creative “toy” because the projects in the book are not only fascinating, but also a visual educational delight – a real page turner, hard to put down treasure trove of learning.
The information is so well put together with the many examples, some easy and others that are more involved. I have already tried several and I have enjoyed doing them.
This book will be within my reach and nestled among the many other Leland books I use in my reference and creative process.

Thanks for the review, Janet. I'm glad you're finding the book so useful!
New book should come with warning
Nita Leland’s art books are informative, adventurous and fun. Her latest accomplishment, “New Creative Collage Techniques” is another jewel in her crown.
Each page is a wealth of knowledge along with visual excitement with lots of colorful images and just enough words for clear explanation. Also, the spiral bound book lays flat and stays open for easy viewing. An artist’s dream!
On the other hand, the book should come with a warning, being, once you open it, you will never want to close it. So forget the domestic chores, grab your art supplies and discover Nita’s “Disney” world of creativity.
